Meet Sven

Sven, named after the lovable reindeer from Disney’s Frozen, has been part of the Butterfly Dreams Farm family for about five years. Although it is hard to imagine now, Sven arrived as a rescue horse in heartbreaking condition. This giant Percheron gelding was severely emaciated, at least 500 pounds underweight, and looked more like a walking skeleton than the gentle giant he is today.
When Sven first arrived, he seemed quiet and withdrawn. Looking back, we now realize that was not truly his personality at all. He was simply putting every ounce of energy he had into surviving. As his health improved and he slowly regained strength, his real personality began to shine through, and what a personality it turned out to be.
Today, Sven is one of the biggest clowns on the farm. He loves attention and firmly believes he should be involved in absolutely everything happening around him. He is well known for picking up halters and tossing them at people when he feels ignored. He has also been known to let himself through gates so he can investigate whatever excitement he thinks he might be missing. In many ways, Sven is like an overgrown toddler living in the body of a draft horse.
Despite his playful attitude, Sven faces more than his fair share of health challenges. He has severe equine asthma, anhidrosis, which affects his ability to sweat and regulate body temperature, and significant insect allergies that can make Georgia summers especially difficult for him. Managing these conditions requires daily medications, careful monitoring, and a lot of extra attention from the staff and volunteers who care for him.
One of the more entertaining parts of Sven’s treatment plan is his daily serving of dark beer, which helps with his anhidrosis. Unsurprisingly, this detail tends to make him a favorite with visitors.
Recently, Sven gave us quite a scare when he suddenly began losing weight. Given his age and medical history, we worried something much more serious might be happening. Because he has struggled with ulcers in the past, we decided to begin ulcer treatment, and thankfully he responded beautifully. He regained the weight he had lost, returned to his usual mischievous self, and reminded us once again just how resilient he truly is.
If you ask Sven, however, the only downside to feeling better was having to return to work. He seemed perfectly content spending his days eating hay, relaxing, and supervising everyone else’s activities from a safe distance. While Sven may not have been thrilled about rejoining the therapy program, we were incredibly grateful to see him healthy, happy, and back to being himself.
Now believed to be in his mid-twenties, Sven remains one of the most beloved horses at Butterfly Dreams Farm. He can be a little pushy at times, and he occasionally likes to test his riders just to keep things interesting, but beneath that mischievous exterior is a horse with a huge heart.
His journey from neglected rescue horse to cherished therapy partner is a testament to resilience, second chances, and the incredible bond between horses and the people who love them.
We are grateful every day that Sven found his way to Butterfly Dreams Farm, and we suspect he feels the same, even if he would still rather spend most of his time standing beside the hay feeder.
