What Is Therapeutic Riding?

If you recently heard the term therapeutic riding from a doctor, therapist, teacher, or friend, you might be wondering:

“Wait… do they literally mean horses?”

Yes. They do.

And honestly, most people have never heard of therapeutic riding until someone they trust brings it up.

Therapeutic riding is a program that uses horses to support individuals physically, emotionally, mentally, and socially. While it may look like horseback riding from the outside, there is much more happening during a session than simply learning how to ride.

For some riders, therapeutic riding can help improve:

  • Balance

  • Coordination

  • Muscle strength

  • Posture

  • Confidence

  • Communication skills

  • Emotional regulation

For others, it becomes something just as important—a calm, safe place where they can relax, connect, and simply be.

Why Horses?

This is usually the next question people ask.

Horses have a unique movement that closely matches the natural motion of the human body while walking. This movement helps riders develop balance, coordination, strength, and body awareness in a way that often feels more natural—and more enjoyable—than traditional exercises.

But the physical benefits are only part of the story.

The emotional connection matters just as much.

Horses respond to patience, consistency, and trust. Many riders begin to feel calmer, more confident, and more secure simply by spending time with them.

And sometimes… horses are just a lot more fun than another therapy room.

Who Is Therapeutic Riding For?

Therapeutic riding can support children, teens, and adults with a wide range of needs.

Some riders may have:

  • Physical disabilities

  • Developmental delays

  • Autism

  • Anxiety

  • PTSD

  • Sensory processing challenges

  • Neurological conditions

  • Emotional or behavioral needs

Others may simply benefit from being outdoors, moving their bodies, and building confidence in a supportive and encouraging environment.

Every rider’s journey looks a little different—and that’s exactly how it should be.

What Happens During a Session?

One of the most common concerns we hear is:

“What if I or my child has never been around horses before?”

That’s completely okay.

Many riders start with little to no horse experience at all.

Each session is designed to meet the rider exactly where they are. Depending on individual goals, sessions may include:

  • Grooming and connecting with the horse

  • Learning basic riding skills

  • Balance and coordination activities

  • Games and interactive exercises

  • Communication and listening practice

  • Confidence-building experiences

Safety is always a top priority, and every rider is supported by trained instructors and volunteers throughout their session.

It’s Okay to Feel Nervous

Trying something new can feel overwhelming—especially when horses are involved. They are large animals, and it’s normal to feel unsure at first.

That’s why our team is here.

No one is expected to come in knowing anything about horses.

The goal isn’t perfection.

The goal is growth, confidence, connection, and support.

More Than Riding

For many families, therapeutic riding becomes more than just an activity.

It becomes something riders look forward to each week.

A place to build confidence.A place to celebrate progress.A place where small victories matter.

And sometimes, healing starts with something as simple as sitting in the saddle and realizing:

“I can do this.”
